Paula Deen lawsuit dismissed, but not before it destroyed career

Paula Deen won the battle, but she may have lost the war: The discrimination lawsuit brought against her was dismissed Friday, but only after it devastated the multimillion-dollar career of one of the most popular icons of the food world.

The case ended up casting a toxic cloud over Deen, who admitted during a deposition in the case that she used the N-word decades earlier -- not by hurling it at an employee, but in a private conversation.

Deen tried to explain away the circumstances. She said she used the word after she was held up at gunpoint by an African American man. But it helped unleash a tidal wave of negative media attention that cost Deen millions of dollars in endorsements and deals. Among them: Food Network announced that it would not renew their relationship.

Paula Deen's return to the spotlight after months in hiding was alternately emotional and confusing for both Deen and the audience who came to watch her demonstration at the Metro Cooking Houston show over the weekend.

Following that nasty scandal regarding Deen's use of racial slurs and the subsequent non-renewal of her Food Network cooking show and cancellation of her latest cookbook, Deen stayed out of the public eye for about three months. Though the scandal caused Deen to lose endorsements and angered some fans, the crowd gathered at Metro Cooking Saturday morning had nothing but love for the celebrity chef. Before Deen entered the auditorium, the crowd began chants of "Paula! Paula! Paula!" and held up signs in support of Deen and her family.

Deen's sons Bobby and Jamie were the first family members onstage. They thanked the crowd for coming, then Bobby introduced his mother, "the most caring and loving woman on this earth," to thunderous applause and a standing ovation.

Paula Deen then stepped onstage, tissues in hand, sobbing.

For at least two minutes, the supportive crowd continued standing and cheering while Deen dabbed at her eyes and tried to gain composure. When she finally spoke, Deen admitted her tears were tears of joy.

August 15, 2013 --- Oprah Talks Trayvon, Race on CNN: "People Think If They Don't Use the 'N-Word' They're 'Not Racist"--- Oprah Winfrey and her co-star in Lee Daniels' The Butler Forest Whitaker appeared on Anderson Cooper 360 Thursday night to promote their film. During the interview, Anderson Cooper asked Winfrey to relate the historical themes of the movie to the modern day struggles for African-Americans, including the Trayvon Martin case.

King Samir Shabazz is best known for bringing a billy club to a North Philly polling place in 2008, which sparked a federal probe.

KING SAMIR SHABAZZ says black people should create militias to exterminate whites, skin them alive, pour acid on them, sic pit bulls on them, bust their heads with rocks and even raid nurseries to "kill everything white in sight."

"I would love nothing more than to come home with a cracker's head in my book bag," Shabazz, a Philly street preacher and national field marshal for the New Black Panther Party, said on a black-power radio show.

Such sentiment hasn't gotten him arrested.

But allegedly carrying a gun did.
