It is believed that later, Chism followed Ritzer to the bathroom unbeknownst to her. The teen was wearing a mask and he used a box cutter to slit his teacher's throat not before using a tree branch to sexually assault her. Surveillance video shows Chism leaving the bathroom after the murder and coming back several minutes later with a recycling bin that he used that he used to transport Ritzer's body to the woods at the back of the school.

Police revealed they found the 24-year-old's body in a "sexually staged" position naked from the waist down. A note next to her read "I hate you all." Chism stole his teacher's underwear, her credit cards and her cell phone, all of which were later found in his backpack together with the bloody box cutter.
