Ceremony Marks Opening of Region's Newest Bus Service
ATLANTA – Public officials from Clayton County and the State of Georgia inaugurated C-Tran, the Atlanta region's newest transportation system, at a ceremony held this morning at the Forest Park, Georgia city hall. C-Tran is the first bus service provided under the auspices of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) and is also the first bus system to begin operations in the Atlanta region in the last twelve years.
“GRTA is proud to bring this new service to Clayton County and our region,” said Dr. Catherine Ross, GRTA executive director. “Our region's air quality and traffic congestion demand that we offer more and better transportation choices to our residents. C-Tran is an important first step in GRTA's efforts to fulfill this need.”
Ross was joined by local and state officials including Forest Park Mayor Charles Hall, Clayton County Commissioner Crandle Bray, Senator Terrell Starr, Senator Nadine Thomas, Representative Valencia Seay, MARTA board member Jimmy Benefield, Chairman of the Board of the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce Kirby Glaze, and Deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation Harold Linnenkohl. Letters from Governor Roy Barnes, Senator Max Cleland and Representative Billy McKinney were also read.
Service on C-Tran's two routes, 501 and 503, began early this morning. GRTA board of directors member Eric Hovdesven was one of the first riders, arriving at the ceremony on a 501 bus, which passes the Forest Park City Hall on its route. The white, 40-foot, low-floor buses, are powered by clean fuel compressed natural gas. Fares are $1.50 with free transfers to the MARTA rail system. Unlimited one-week passes are available for $13 and monthly passes for $52.50. Transit passes are sold at Southlake Mall and Kroger grocery stores throughout Clayton County.
