Last Updated On: 1/25/2005 9:59:26 AM Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill is the focus of yet another lawsuit; this one from two women charging him with racial discrimination.
Sherrie Martin and Holly Watkins ? who are white ? claim Sheriff Hill is firing white employees and replacing them with black employees, according to the suit filed Monday on their behalf by Attorney Harlan Miller. Martin worked as a secretary for the former sheriff.
Hill, the newly elected sheriff, disputes the women?s claims. Martin and Watkins are not among the 27 deputies and officers that Sheriff Hill first came under fire for sacking on his first day on the job.
A storm of criticism followed the firings, which moved the sheriff to agree to place his fired workers on administrative leave with pay. Still, he then allowed the 27 to return to work, but not necessarily at their former jobs.
The employees claim their jobs are protected by the county's civil service system. A hearing on the latest lawsuit is scheduled for January 31.
The hearing could be delayed if more time is needed to get a visiting judge to hear the case.
All of the county's Superior Court judges have recused themselves from the case because of their regular business contact with the sheriff.
